Jenna Flor was born in England and
studied classical violin and piano, playing in youth orchestras during
her teens. She is completely self taught on the guitar. Jenna
was inspired to pick up the nylon string guitar after listening to
Jose Feliciano and Sergio Mendes. This interest evolved as
she developed a passion for Brazilian and Latin music. When she heard
the Getz/Gilberto album she taught herself the Portuguese lyrics,
jazz chords and rhythms of many bossa nova and samba standards from
that era.
When Jenna was 17, she spent a year in Paris busking with her guitar
and violin in the metro for money. She ran into many latin musicians
who taught her chords and rhythms. She would play 'One Note Samba'
to earn enough change for breakfast (a bottle of wine and a baguette
with' La Vache Qui Rit' cheese). As she improved her playing,
so did her venues and meals. She graduated to playing outside
the cafes on Boulevard St Michelle substituting her humble baguette
with a 'Croque Monsieur' which is a fancy long grilled cheese sandwhich.
She
busked like that all the way through Turkey, Kabul, Greece, Kashmir,
and Delhi (playing violin with an East Indian rock band!), eventually
landing in Canada where she spent 8 years in Montreal playing
with various Brazilian and Latin American groups.
Since then Jenna has developed her own unique style of blending Brazilian
and Latin rhythms and applying them to the nylon string guitar. She
is primarily a guitarist who accompanies her guitar with her voice
as she sings in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Since
1995 she had been living on Gabriola Island, and recently moved to
Nanaimo B.C., playing in various musical combos. This new delightful
combination of like- minded musicians makes up the Bossa Loca Quartet.
